The Flip Mino and MinoHD have been a success in the U.S. for some time now and Cisco have just launched these two models in New Zealand and Australia. I was sent one for this review just before launch and can confirm that it's a success amongst my friends - geeks and non-geeks.

Three years or so after Bleeding Edge bought a widescreen video camera, under the delusion that we were about to become the Cecil B. DeMille of the family documentary, our entire collection of MiniHD cassettes numbers roughly one dozen. Unfortunately, only one of them is full. The remainder contain no more than 10 minutes or so of footage. They represent what you might call a catalogue of good intentions.

Has the Flip Mino HD sounded the death knell for the handicam? Well, it has for me. I've always wanted to own a handicam or some sort of video camera that is portable and can be whipped out at a moment's notice. Now I can with Flip's pint-sized Mino HD camcorder, which is roughly the size of a mobile phone and fits in a shirt pocket. The Flip takes everything I thought I knew about camcorders and turned it on its head. And that's good.

It’s the gadget de jour for the geek elite and the blogging digerati. It’s more trendy than Fendi. It’s the iPod or BlackBerry of camcorders. It’s the Flip, a flash-based video camera which combines point-and-shoot video capture with plug-and-play editing, uploading and sharing.
Lightning Review: Flip Mino HDLightning Review: Flip Mino HD
It fits in the palm of your hand and it’s as light as a feather. It doesn’t look like a camcorder. It shoots pretty good 720p. But that’s not why I love the Flip Mino. I love it because this is the very essence of ease of use. The ideal gadget for the anti-gadgeteer.
